Dear Oncho Investigator,
Since our meeting at Woods Hole in April of 1991, things have moved along
briskly for the EMCF-sponsored onchocerciasis research. The mouse chamber
model of David Abraham has been confirmed in its ability to detect immunity
by Simon Townson, Mark Taylor, and Ted Bianco. The Clark Foundation has
set up a vaccine screening program involving Richard Lucius in Heidelberg
and David Abraham in Philadelphia. Additionally, the Foundation Trustees
approved support for Rocky Tuan to carry out in situ hybridization
and immunohistology for localization of antigens in oncho parasites.
All of this has led to the need to communicate more directly with laboratories
working on the immunology and vaccine development for onchocerciasis. This
is the first in a series of informal newsletters, "The Greene Sheet:,
that will be prepared by the Oncho Task Force to keep you abreast of activities
and progress in our onchocerciasis research program. It is intended to begin
an exchange of information, so your response to this newsletter, with news
and comments--and even complaints--to Cathy Steel, the editor, will be helpful
to your colleagues. Subsequent issues will provide space for this exchange
as well as news prepared by the Oncho Task Force.
I hope you will find this newsletter useful and that it will contribute
to the continuing fast pace of research on onchocerciasis.
With best wishes,
Yours sincerely,
Joseph A. Cook, M.D., Director
